Materials

We use Borgert and Belgard, the top names in paver supply, to ensure the highest quality materials are used. There are many colors to choose from. The variety of colors can be used to create single borders, double borders, or decorative inlays like a compass point which you can see in the patio pictured. [Paver Project Highlight]

Construction Process

The first step in paver construction is the basework. Underneath, there is always at least 4″ of compacted road base and 1″ of leveling sand to ensure a strong steady foundation that is resistant to settling. This means that we excavate 8″ to create space for the base and the pavers which are 3″ tall. After the base is done and the pavers are set, the gaps are filled with polymeric sand which sets up hard so that it doesn’t just wash away.

What about a Raised Paver Patio?

As you can see, not all patios or walkways can be set at ground level. In this case, we use wall block in a complimentary color to build up to the correct level and then fill the space behind the wall with road base.

Frequently Asked Questions About Paver Patios and Installation

What brands of pavers do you use, and why?

We use Borgert and Belgard, two of the top names in supply. These premium brands deliver exceptional durability, a wide range of colors and textures, and long-term performance in Colorado’s variable climate. This ensures your patio, walkway, or path resists settling, cracking, and fading for years.

How long does installation typically take?

Most residential patios or walkways take just days, depending on size, site access, weather, and any custom features like borders or raised sections. We handle everything from excavation to final cleanup for a smooth, efficient process.

What is the construction process?

We start with thorough basework, excavating and building up as needed for a strong, stable foundation resistant to settling. Pavers (typically several inches thick) are then set, and joints are filled to lock everything in place and prevent washout or weeds.

Can you install a raised paver patio?

Yes—raised patios are common when ground-level isn’t feasible (e.g., due to slope or elevation changes). We build up using complementary wall blocks (like Borgert Strassen), fill behind with base material, and top with pavers for a seamless, sturdy result. See our examples using Borgert Cracovia in colors like Minnesota River or Iron Range with matching borders.

How durable are they in Colorado’s weather (snow, freeze-thaw, etc.)?

Very durable—properly installed interlocking pavers flex slightly with ground movement and resist cracking better than poured concrete. The compacted base help prevent shifting or heaving from freeze-thaw cycles. With good drainage and occasional maintenance, they can last 20+ years or more.

Do pavers require much maintenance?

Minimal! Sweep occasionally, rinse with a hose, and refill polymeric sand every few years if needed. Avoid sharp tools during snow removal to prevent surface chips. Unlike concrete, individual pavers can be replaced easily if damaged.

Can pavers be used for driveways or just patios/walkways?

Yes, though our page focuses on patios, paths, and walkways. Borgert and Belgard products handle vehicular traffic when installed with a deeper, reinforced base. Contact us for driveway-specific options.

How do you handle drainage?

We build in a slight pitch (slope) during base preparation so water drains off naturally, preventing pooling. The permeable joints (with polymeric sand) allow some water infiltration, reducing runoff—ideal for Denver’s occasional heavy rains or snowmelt.

What design options are available with colors and patterns?

Plenty! Choose from many colors to create single or double borders, decorative inlays (like compass points), or mixed patterns. We can show you examples to match your home’s style—rustic, modern, or blended.

How much does a paver patio cost, and what’s next?

Costs vary by size, design complexity, and site prep, but using premium Borgert/Belgard materials ensures great value and longevity. For an accurate estimate tailored to your space, request a free appointment—we’ll assess your yard and provide options.
